You can see it in the way she gets up. The pause before her back legs commit. The slow turn at the bottom of the stairs. The walk that used to be a mile is now half a mile, and she's the one who decides when it's over. She's not the puppy you brought home, and you're not ready to lose her.
This post explains what CBD actually does for dog joint pain, what the research supports (and what it doesn't), how to dose it by your dog's weight, and how CBD chews fit alongside whatever your vet is doing. We'll be honest about where the evidence is strong and where it's still developing — because your dog deserves a real answer, not a sales pitch.
CBD has the strongest research support of any over-the-counter option for canine joint pain. A 2018 Cornell study showed dogs with osteoarthritis given 2 mg/kg of CBD oil twice daily had measurable improvements in pain scores and activity levels at four weeks. The catch: most pet CBD products on the shelf are dosed at a fraction of that, which is why so many owners try CBD, see nothing, and assume it doesn't work. Dose matters, and most products fail on dose alone.
What Joint Pain Actually Looks Like in Your Dog
Dogs hide pain. It's evolutionary — a limping animal in a pack is a target. By the time you notice your dog is uncomfortable, the underlying joint changes have usually been progressing for months or years. Roughly 1 in 5 adult dogs has some degree of osteoarthritis, and that number rises to about 4 in 5 in dogs over eight years old.
Early signs that often get missed:
- Slower to get up after lying down, especially first thing in the morning.
- Reluctance to jump onto the couch or into the car — not refusal, just hesitation.
- Stiffness that loosens up after the first few minutes of a walk (“warm-up” pattern).
- Shorter walks by choice. She turns toward home earlier than she used to.
- Licking a specific joint (often the wrist, elbow, or knee) when at rest.
- A change in sleep position — no longer curling up, or shifting frequently.
None of these mean CBD instead of a vet. They mean a vet visit, an exam, possibly X-rays, and a real diagnosis. CBD is one tool in a larger plan, not a replacement for one.
What the Research Actually Shows About CBD for Dog Joint Pain
The research base on CBD for canine osteoarthritis is small but better than most pet supplements can claim. Three studies are worth knowing by name.
Cornell, 2018 (Gamble et al.)
Twenty-two dogs with osteoarthritis received 2 mg/kg of CBD oil twice daily for four weeks. Owners completed validated pain assessments (Hudson Activity Scale, Canine Brief Pain Inventory) and veterinarians performed orthopedic exams. The result: significant decreases in pain and significant increases in activity, with no behavioral side effects. Mild elevations in alkaline phosphatase (a liver enzyme) were observed on bloodwork — which is why we recommend baseline and follow-up bloodwork for dogs on long-term CBD.
Baylor, 2020 (Verrico et al.)
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study — the gold standard — in dogs with osteoarthritis. Dogs receiving CBD showed significant pain reductions at doses around 20 to 50 mg per day depending on weight. Importantly, this study compared CBD oil, CBD with naproxen, and naproxen alone, and CBD performed comparably to the NSAID on owner-reported quality-of-life measures.
Brioschi et al., 2020
An Italian study added CBD to standard multimodal pain management in dogs with osteoarthritis. Dogs on the combination protocol showed greater quality-of-life improvements than dogs on standard care alone. This is the protocol that matches how most modern vets actually treat OA: not one drug, but several tools used together.
What this body of evidence supports: CBD reduces pain and increases mobility in dogs with osteoarthritis at appropriate doses. What it doesn't support: CBD curing arthritis, replacing surgery for dogs who need it, or working at the tiny doses most pet CBD products contain.
How We Build Our Dog Joint Chews
A note from John, our founder.
I built Soothe Organic because I watched my own family run out of options for sleep, pain, and the slow grind of getting older. When we extended the line to dogs, I wasn't going to do what most pet CBD brands do.
Here's what most pet CBD brands do: take the human formulation, water it down, add bacon flavor, and charge premium prices for a chew that contains 1 to 2 mg of CBD. A 70-pound retriever needs roughly 30 to 70 mg twice daily to get into the research-supported range. A 2-mg chew is a placebo for that dog.
Our dog joint chews use the same USDA Certified Organic, full-spectrum hemp from our Casper, Wyoming family farms that goes into our human tinctures — with one critical difference. Pet products are formulated to be below detectable THC, because THC is toxic to dogs even at low doses. We dose them at strengths that actually reach the research range without your dog needing to eat half the bag. Same 60-day money-back guarantee. If they don't work for your dog, we want them back.
Practical Guidance: How to Dose CBD for Your Dog's Joints
The most common reason CBD “doesn't work” for a dog is that the dose was never high enough to do anything. Use this table as a starting point, and titrate up over 7 to 10 days.

How to start:
- Begin at the low end of your dog's weight row, twice daily — morning and evening, ideally with a small meal.
- Hold that dose for 5 to 7 days. Watch for side effects (loose stool, drowsiness, decreased appetite). They're rare and usually resolve at a lower dose.
- If you don't see meaningful change in mobility by week two, increase by 50% and hold for another week.
- Continue titrating until you see clear improvement or until you've reached the research-backed dose for her weight.
- If you've reached the research dose with no benefit at four weeks, CBD may not be the right tool. Talk to your vet about next steps.
What to expect:
- Easier to get up after sleep or rest.
- More willingness to climb stairs, jump up, or go on a longer walk.
- Less licking of sore joints.
- Better sleep — less repositioning during the night.
What not to expect:
- Sedation. CBD doesn't make dogs sleepy at appropriate doses; it reduces pain so they rest more comfortably.
- A cure. Joint changes don't reverse. CBD makes living with them easier.
- An immediate effect. Some dogs respond in days; most need two weeks of consistent dosing.
- A reason to skip the vet. CBD works alongside diagnosis, weight management, joint supplements, physical therapy, and pain meds when needed.
Who This Is — and Isn't — For
Five honest qualifications. If three or more describe your dog, CBD chews are worth a 30-day trial.
This is for your dog if:
- She's slowing down on walks, hesitating before stairs, or stiff when she gets up.
- Your vet has confirmed osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, or generalized joint wear.
- She's on NSAIDs and you want to add a complementary tool (with vet sign-off) or potentially reduce NSAID dose over time.
- She can't tolerate NSAIDs because of liver, kidney, or GI issues, and your vet is looking for alternatives.
- You'd rather start with a USDA Certified Organic, third-party-tested option than a shelf brand of unknown origin.
This isn't for your dog if:
- She's never been examined by a vet for the limp or stiffness. CBD isn't a substitute for diagnosis — the limp could be a torn ligament, an infection, or something else entirely.
- She has known liver disease without your vet's involvement (CBD is processed by the liver).
- She's on prescription medication, especially anti-seizure drugs, sedatives, or steroids, without your vet knowing about the CBD.
- You're expecting it to replace surgery she actually needs. Dogs with severe hip dysplasia or unstable joints often need surgical solutions.
- She's pregnant or nursing, or under one year old. The research isn't there yet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is CBD safe for dogs?
For most healthy adult dogs, hemp-derived CBD is well-tolerated. The Cornell study gave dogs 2 mg/kg twice daily for four weeks with no observed behavioral side effects. The most common finding on bloodwork was a mild rise in liver enzymes (alkaline phosphatase), which is why we recommend baseline bloodwork before starting long-term CBD and a follow-up at three to six months. Dogs on NSAIDs, prescription pain meds, or with liver disease need a vet's sign-off first.
How much CBD should I give my dog for joint pain?
Start at 0.25 mg per pound of body weight, twice daily, and titrate up over 7 to 10 days. The Cornell study used 1 mg per pound (2 mg/kg) twice daily and showed clear pain and activity improvements at that dose. A 70-pound dog at the research-backed dose is taking about 70 mg twice daily — which means most 2 to 5 mg pet chews are far below the effective range. Check the milligrams per chew on the back of the bag, not the marketing on the front.
How long does CBD take to work for dog joint pain?
Some dogs show calmer movement within a few days. Most owners see meaningful change in willingness to climb stairs, get up after rest, or walk farther around the two-week mark. The Cornell study measured clinical improvement at four weeks. Run the same dose for at least two weeks before deciding it isn't working — and verify you're actually at a research-backed dose for your dog's weight before concluding CBD doesn't help her.
Can my dog take CBD with other medications?
CBD is metabolized through the cytochrome P450 enzyme pathway in the liver — the same pathway many veterinary drugs use, including some NSAIDs, anti-seizure medications, and steroids. This doesn't necessarily mean you can't combine them; it means your vet needs to know. If your dog is on prescription medication, talk to your vet before adding CBD and ask whether they want to recheck liver values after four to six weeks. Many vets are now familiar with CBD and supportive of carefully managed combinations.
Will CBD make my dog high or sleepy?
No. THC is psychoactive and toxic to dogs; CBD is not. Soothe Organic's dog chews use hemp-derived CBD that is below detectable THC and tested by a third-party lab. At appropriate doses, dogs don't appear sedated — they move more easily because the joint pain is reduced, not because they're sleepy. If your dog seems unusually drowsy on CBD, the dose is too high. Drop back by 25% and retry.
Try the Chew That Was Built for the Job
Our CBD dog joint chews use full-spectrum, USDA Certified Organic hemp from our Casper, Wyoming family farms — dosed to reach the research-backed range, not just to look good on the shelf. They're soft, chewable, and most dogs eat them like a treat.
Same Casper, Wyoming family farms. Same USDA Certified Organic seal — one of the only in the country. Same 60-day money-back guarantee. If they don't work for your dog, we want them back.
